As early as 2014, Peter Lyngdorf founded Purifi. He gathered some of the most outstanding talents in the audio industry to research how to further improve audio performance. Today, Purifi provides Eigentakt D-class amplifiers and various speaker drive units, including paper and aluminum sound basins. All their products have astonishingly low distortion characteristics. At some point, Purifi speaker drive units will appear in Lyngdorf speaker designs, namely the Lyngdorf CUE-100. We want to be the first to “eat crabs”.
Lyngdorf has always enjoyed a good reputation in the field of digital amplifiers. For many years, RoomPerfect has been one of their signs. In addition, they have established a partnership with Steinway & Sons and provide exquisite products. It can be said that these guys are very serious. Lyngdorf also provides many speaker solutions, including stereo and multi-channel settings. They like the 2+2 speaker setting, which extends the traditional stereo speaker through the (corner/boundary) subwoofer. This method improves the impact and shock of the bass, thereby providing a better insight or depth into the sound field, and can increase the volume without affecting performance. Their product lineup ranges from the MH series of several hundred euros to the large-scale line source solutions of the LS series. Purifi’s low-distortion drive unit presents a brand-new listening experience. Their midrange and (mid) bass are simple and clean, and they are presented in a truly musical way. So what if Lyngdorf integrates the current best Purifi drive unit technology into a new and fashionable design? This is the “reason for existence” of Lyngdorf CUE-100.
The excellent manufacturing quality of Lyngdorf CUE-100 is irresistible. The cabinet looks very sturdy and weighs close to 14kg. The triangular design helps prevent internal standing waves. There is space in front to place AMT or “pneumatic unit”. This is currently one of the best tweeter designs because it is light and moves very fast, and can handle a lot of bandwidth and power. Below it is one of the best units currently available from Purifi: a 6.5-inch aluminum basin unit with typical neutral suspension geometry. In order to enhance the overall bass performance and SPL processing capability, two 6.5-inch passive bass units occupy the sides of the triangular design. Lyngdorf CUE-100 is a closed speaker, and the gold-plated terminals are hidden at the bottom of the box. They can use Y-shaped plugs or banana plugs.
In terms of design, the actual appearance of the speaker has multiple veneer options: white/white base, black/black base, white/oak color base and black/oak color base. Comes with oak tripod or foot. Although not everyone likes similar tripod designs, this is for the best stability, form follows function. Real audiophiles often like to “see” their equipment, that is, expose the unit outside, but CUE-100 also provides different color grilles. The fabric of the grille is provided by Gabriel, which has been one of Denmark’s leading fabric experts since 1851.
We paired the Lyngdorf CUE-100 with the Lyngdorf TDAI-3400 digital amplifier. Using the same brand often brings added value, that is, you can use the RoomPerfect correction program to minimize the impact of the listening space. In addition, the amplifier will also make specific settings for the speakers when connecting the system. Since the rated power of Lyngdorf CUE-100 is 4 ohms, Lyngdorf TDAI-3400 can provide up to 2×400 watts of power. Considering the sensitivity of 83 dB, safety comes first.
The first is an attractive track from “Arca”. From the first note, you will immediately enter the “focus” mode. You can hardly believe what you heard. The arrangement of synthesizers and chords interweaves in the air, and the sound field is surprisingly wide and deep. The sound has no graininess, full of skills and details, as if the performance is happening in front of me. The bass line is very clear, has a strong sense of air, and has a convincing weight. The overall separation degree has been maximized, and the musical intention has been fully realized. The airiness, smoothness and realism of the entire song will be addictive.
The rhythm of Tony Furtado’s music is faster. The same thing happened again. From the first few notes, the arrangement of percussion music kicked off. All different elements (cymbals, small drums, big drums, tap drums) are presented in such a realistic way that people think the drum group is in the room. All sounds are very balanced, and the dynamics are just right. You can easily detect the reverb added in the recording studio. The guitar has no metallic particles and sounds real. The voice of the lead singer sounds open and infectious. When the volume is adjusted to the actual performance level, the entire system has no pressure.
Next is the rap music collaborated by Getts and Stormzy. The accompaniment vocals drifted into the listening room from both sides. All the sounds in the mix can be easily distinguished. I describe it as a “studio monitor-like effect” because you can clearly and separately distinguish every part of the song. The biggest difference is that Lyngdorf CUE-100 doesn’t sound like a studio monitor at all. All the puzzles are combined in a way that reveals the artist’s intention. The bass is compact, accurate, clear, and has a real sense of weight, indicating that the speaker has a full-range vision. I can boldly say that if you blindfold the audience, everyone will say that Lyngdorf CUE-100 is a large floor-standing speaker.
